No blood

I’ll write more later but basically today’s appointment was a complete waste. We were set up with a ped in our new town, basically a convenience so we wouldn’t have to drive to Iowa City just for a blood draw. I guess I’m so accustomed to the stellar care we receive at the U that I’ve taken it for granted. This was Nora’s first visit outside the U, and wow, the lab here just doesn’t compare. They didn’t have the fancy numbing cream, they didn’t have the sugar water, they didn’t even have one of those light things to see babies tiny veins. They basically had Nora sitting on my lap, trying to get blood from her arm, just like they would an adult. They seemed so very inexperienced with a baby. They stuck her twice and got no blood. So… We have to go back another day for them to try again. I’m thinking of just making the drive to Iowa City instead though. A couple hours in the car is worth her being more comfortable.

  1. Stef…sorry I haven’t posted in a while. I have been reading and keeping up with all of Nora’s growth. She’s getting so big!
This situation is near and dear to my heart. Not only am I a mom (so I feel your pain), but I’m a pediatric hematology/oncology nurse. We use all the fancy (I say necessary) tricks to keep our kids comfortable. I’m so sorry you are going through this. If you have any questions or want to vent just contact me.
